The meanings are very similar, and basically the same idea. Here is how we can differentiate between the two:
To "hurl" is to throw. Flat out, throw something. It can be with great force.
To "pelt" is almost the same thing, except when you are "pelting" something, you are doing it over and over again. It is to hit or attack multiple times, perhaps with missiles in war. They "pelt" the enemy.
Very close meanings, however can be used in dramatically different ways!
