You've got it right. Some services require a ticket to be bought before you board and this is inspected on board, requiring a "Tickets please". Some services allow you to pay for your trip on board and would therefore require a "Fares please".

I know it takes a while for those blue rectangular boxes to pop up but when those do pop up you pick the best answer and thats it.
I do agree that the heads up should be changed to say " Heads up, time to choose best answer" or "Your question will go to voting if you don't choose a best answer now" or something that indicates it's time to choose best answer rather than extending it which is usually useless. If a question doesn't get an answer that the asker thinks is best by the time they get the heads up chances are they won't get one.
If they changed that notice maybe there would be fewer questions in voting.
