Earlier this month, the president ordered a six month ban on exploratory deepwater drilling – a move some experts predict will pour salt into the wounds of the already injured region.

The moratorium could lead to massive job losses in Louisiana, which relies on drilling to support its economy, Louisiana State University Economist James Richardson said.

“The moratorium could be more devastating than the leak, because more people are employed by the oil industry than the fishing industry,” he said.

The moratorium could cost the state more than 20,000 jobs by the end of the year, according to the Louisiana Department of Economic Development. The Department estimates for every one employee working on a rig, nine employees onshore are working to support that rig.

“During one of the most challenging economic periods in decades, the last thing we need is to enact public policies that will certainly destroy thousands of existing jobs while preventing the creation of thousands more,” Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal said in a letter to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar

1. Is there a market for "60 and over" personnel looking for work in my related field?
2. Is so, … where would this market be?
3. I am interested with possibly pursuing a master’s degree. Upon completion, say within two years, do colleges and universities hire individuals for teaching positions at that age, … 62? (Note: I have a four year BS degree in Biology/Biochemistry.)
4. If not, briefly what would be my options?
5. Are there any job websites, specifically oriented for those individuals 60 and over who are looking for contracted/consulting positions?
6. What would you consider to be one of the "hottest" fields available today, requiring a master’s degree?

Welcome to the club. No one is going to hire someone over 60 even with super duper training. It costs too much in insurance and benefits to hire someone your age.

You should join the Peace Corps and with your talents and experience could make a signifcant contribution in some country. I tried for the Peace Corps but did not have any skills to offer and I am over 60. You cannot get medical insurance in the U.S. or Medicare, so you may as well go somewhere that offers health care. You are the perfect candidate. After the first 24 months you receive a stipend of several thousands and have no housing costs while posted.

Other than that, you can volunteer anywhere in the world. There is so much need.

Experience isn’t always necessary, but qualifications are.

The company that I work for deals with the survey and protection of oil rigs and pipelines against corrosion. They are always looking for offshore engineers. They will entertain anyone with a Chemical or Electrical/Electronic based degree or diploma

I know what you’re going thru, ,my husband’s in the military and sometimes he’s gone for 6 months straight, so I know how it feels to miss him terribly and the "fears" that come from being apart from each other. I have to agree with the first response and that is communication is the most important thing when you’re away from each other. In my case, my husband works in a submarine and we can’t have any type of communication until he gets to port and sometimes he doesn’t get there until 3 months after. So yeah, I know exactly how it is.

Unfortunately, there’s no easy way to keep from missing him. It is something that you learn to get used to overtime. When I married my husband, he was already in the Navy and at first, it was extremely hard having to get used to him being away but overtime, I’ve learned how to deal with it. I work full time and I busy myself with my activities and friends. In that way, it makes it easier to deal with but doesn’t completely make it go away either.
I would suggest expressing to your husband how you feel. Maybe he’s feeling the same thing. Communicate when possible and keep the connection with him going.
