My husband wants to go to FL for the oil rig job, if we move closer to his work, can he come home sometimes? I understand the whole 3 weeks gone, 2 weeks home. Just wondering. Thanks.

That sounds about right. I’ve seen 1 month on, 1 month off. I believe they work 12 hour shifts, I’m sure he’ll be nothing but work and very tired when he’s on. However, after that he comes home and sits for hours on end with the family……doing nothing. It’s a very erratic lifestyle.

Since he’s on a rig, helicopter and boat are the forms of getting home. You can’t just come home whenever you feel it, it’s a big expensive ordeal.

Tell him to take the job, it will be tough on a family man, but he can always work to go back to working set hours near home. Good luck!

What Trades or Degrees Will Lead Me To A Job In The Mines Or An Oil Rig?

What jobs are available (other then engineering) or trades in that matter that will lead to me work on an Oil Rig or in the Mines in the future?

Trades – mechanics and engine repair = Motorman on a Drilling Rig and gives you a leg up in mining by being able to fix stuff and have a healthy respect for the equipment.
Some technical schools like NAIT and SAIT are offering courses as well on rig operations.

Its somthing that ive always wanted to do . I need the money and i love to travel. Im not the smartest person But im very very willing to learn. I need this job really. Sad to say i just want my family to be pruod of me. Im 20 i live in Fayetteville Nc I have a wife and 1 kid . Could someone hook me up with the links of where i need to go .

My husband just got hired for his first job ever on an oil rig. He loves it; even though he just started. The best thing is that you do not have to have a college degree to do these jobs. The internet is the best place to get started on your job search.

What does a welder do on an oil rig job position?

Just Curious.
oops.. obviously weld, but what exactly? anyone know?

Welders can do all sorts off tasks like repair broken equipment which comes under maintenance.

There are also underwater welders which weld underwater things such as repair and also weld pipe lines. In under Water welding it is a high skill job as you have to have a commercial diving license and train and be a good welder in arc welding MMA (Manual Metal Arc welding) with Arc welding you can also use an electrode that cuts the pipe but doesn’t give a clean cut as oxy & acetylene/propane cutting this is also used underwater at times. But welding on a rig is very dangerous and have to hav lots of risk assessments in place.

is it worth getting a job on a oil rig?

Im thinking about going on a oil rig im 15 now next year i would do apprenticeshipip in britain anyway i was planning to do that then when im 18 they get you a job on a oil rig. Is it worth it or will i be made redundantnt before im retired?

Oh you’ll have a blast.
You will work hard as a rough neck for long hours.
But you’ll make some really good money.
When you are older this is not a good job to have.
Your body will hurt from all the years of labor – and this job requires strength and stamina.

My suggestion – do it for 4 years – rack up some serious money.
Then go back to school to study engineering drilling, even if you don’t drill for oil in your future – you will drill for natural gas.
