The only possible pro to way-off-shore-drilling as opposed to closer and land drilling (that I can think of) would be not having to look at a giant rig; and perhaps a spill would have a quicker effect on the ecosystem since the immediate shore is where a lot of the life is found.

Drilling for oil anywhere always carries with it the responsibility of maintaining and preventing failures. If smart and honest people head such operations, it can be a very safe and clean process; but in my opinion the safest way to drill is close to or on land.

2) The floating Rig which exploded was US built, owned, manned and operated, the company being Trans Ocean.

3) The part that failed was manufactured by Haliburton another American company.

4) The clean up would be much quicker IF the many offers of international assistance were accepted.

5) Help has been rejected because of the Jones Act, a 1920′s piece of legislation passed to protect US shipping companies and the jobs of US seamen.

6) This Act can be waived by Presidential Decree, this has not been forthcoming (I’ll get to the reason for that in a moment)

7) The excuse for NOT waiving the Act "no-one has asked that it should be.

Okay, BP are the ones who will not allow help there. Holland offered skimmers, North Carolina collected material to help clean up the endangered animals and were refused. Help is not being rejected by the U.S. BP does not want anyone down there. I live in North Carolina, and it was just on the news that our help was refused by BP. I do not know about the rigs. I do know about Haliburton, but BP refused the Dutch skimmers when this first started.

But Diamond announced Friday it will lease the rig through June 30, 2011, to Cairo-based Burullus Gas Co., which plans to send the Endeavor to Egyptian waters immediately.

Devon is one of three companies that has cited the deep-water drilling ban in trying to ease out of contracts to lease Diamond rigs. Diamond, a drilling company, said it expects to make about $100 million from the deal, including a $31 million early termination fee it recovered from Devon.
